Aviation Warfare Operator Chief, USN, Aircrew (AC) – Retired
AWC Buckingham retired from Naval Air Systems Command PMA-264, Air Antisubmarine Warfare (ASW) Office, with over 21 years of service. While in the Air ASW community, AWC Buckingham flew more than 4500 hours in support of ASW operations. Over the course of Chief Buckingham’s naval career, his military assignments included tours with NMPC Detachment Dallas, performing critical ASW acoustic system validation at the Naval Air Test Center, Patrol Squadron Four (VP-4) as an acoustic operator, USS America (CV-66) as a CV-TSC watch officer, and Naval Security Group Headquarters. He deployed to the Republic of Vietnam (1970-1971) serving aboard the USS Sphinx (ARL-24) as the Deck Department Yeoman and Boat Watch stander.
Upon completion of his naval career, Jim was Vice President of Earl Briggs Corporation during the development of an innovative object-oriented data base software system. Subsequently, as a program manager with General Scientific Corporation, Jim lent his expertise in support of a wide variety of Navy programs. He retired from General Scientific Corporation after 24 years. Jim is currently runs his own in-home business. Jim has been active in the community, serving on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League, Calvert K9 Search and Rescue and the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department. He was an Emergency Medical Technician and past President of the Waldorf Volunteer Fire department. Jim currently performs Search and Rescue utilizing Bloodhounds, as a founding member of Bay K-9 Search and Recovery. AWC Buckingham’s’ awards include Good Conduct (5 awards), Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement (two awards), National Defense Service Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal, Viet Nam Campaign Medal, Humanitarian Award, Navy Expedition Award, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Battle “E” Award (two awards), Navy Unit Citation (2 awards), Presidential Unit Citation Award, Cold War Award.
